Need of Social Media Guidelines in Nepali Media

 Do Nepali media need social media guidelines ? This became a topic in an interaction program organized by Martin Chautari on 13 September 2012 about ‘How are Nepali Journalists Using Social Media ?’ According to Tilak Pathak journalist and member of Centre for Media Research-Nepal and pundit of this program, “Nepali media have started to feel a need of these guidelines but none has created one”.

 This problem arises when a journalist who is employed in media break news from his/her blog or facebook or twitter. Pathak informed that there is no incident where a journalist has been taken action for breaking news in social media. It seems to me that it is right time that Nepali media prepare their social media guideline. This would make easy for journalists.

It is really good to see progress in Nepal. I insist big companies to come and contribute in growth. We as a mass communication institute believe to support general community and make them aware about various incidences.

Why is there less content on media in media themselves?

I hope that media can be important tools for media literacy. But there is a problem. These media give less priority on issues of media. No doubt their interest is on press freedom. But they show interest in publishing praises. They give space if we write articles with the title like fourth estate. But when we criticize them, they would rather kill the article than to publish it. It shows they are intolerable to criticism. These days CK Lal, an intellect is writing column on media in Nepali Times. This is good. Till today he has written column on Indra Lohani, TV journalism, government-owned media etc. I would be happy when Nepali Times shows courage to publish critical comments about oneself.
