Alternative Media and Alternative Economic Sources

By Harsha Man Maharjan 2009 is ending very soon. And I am getting mails from Alternative media: Open Democracy, The Center for Media and Democracy, FAIR etc for donation. This is no news. It happens every December. Donation is an alternative economic source of mass media. Usually advertisement is main economic source of media. In his article What Makes Mainstream Media Mainstream Noam Chomsky says that mainstream media sells its audiences to advertisers. Michael Albert has written an article titled What Makes Alternative Media Alternative? Here he has focused on alternatives finance apart from others characteristics. Open Democracy, The Center for Media and Democracy, and FAIR are alternative media so they are using alternative source of economy. FAIR watches media biases and censorship. Why is there less content on media in media themselves?

I hope that media can be important tools for media literacy. But there is a problem. These media give less priority on issues of media. No doubt their interest is on press freedom. But they show interest in publishing praises. They give space if we write articles with the title like fourth estate. But when we criticize them, they would rather kill the article than to publish it. It shows they are intolerable to criticism. These days CK Lal, an intellect is writing column on media in Nepali Times. This is good. Till today he has written column on Indra Lohani, TV journalism, government-owned media etc. I would be happy when Nepali Times shows courage to publish critical comments about oneself.

Construction of Online Journalism in Nepal: The Cooperation between an IT Company and Newspaper Organizations

Harsha Man Maharjan Mercantile Communications as Innovator Mercantile Communications was the main innovator of online journalism in Nepal. It mainly operated three websites -  http://www.cen.uiuc.edu/~rshresth/ktmpost/newshome.html  (1995-1996),  www.south-asia.com  (1996-1998), and  www.nepalnews.com  (1999-2015) - made possible by the capabilities of digital technology and the participation of actors in the IT and newspaper industries. From 1995 to the early 2000s, the ISP grew from having a few subscribers to making the Internet commercially available; Mercantile became popular through www.nepalnews.com as a window into Nepal for Nepalis and others who wanted to know about Nepal.
